Sermon on the Mount: Do not Worry

24“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 25Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” ~Matthew 6

The flesh

Always crying out

“I need! I need!”

Always demanding of me

What I cannot give

I’m burdened down

I’m burdened

I cannot satisfy

Even if I try

I cannot satisfy

Always crying out

“Follow Me! Follow Me!”

Always carrying me forward

Down to my knees

I must obey Him now

I must obey

He says He can satisfy

All that I need

He can satisfy

Look up to the sky

See the birds

Flying high

They do not worry

About tomorrow

They take life

One day at a time

Is not life of more worth

Than food?

And yet your Heavenly Father

He feeds every one of them

How much more

Will He feed you

You of little faith?

Seek His kingdom out

Seek it out

Look down at your feet

See the grass

Twirled in the ground

They do not worry about tomorrow

They have no concept of time

They are here today

Gone tomorrow

Is not the body of more worth

Than clothing?

And yet Your Heavenly Father

Clothes them in splendor

In the flowers of the field

How much more will He clothe you

Oh you of little faith?

Seek out His righteousness

Seek it out

Yes, there will be troubles for you

Yes, there will be need

But focus first on God glorified

He will make your way straight

Do not burden yourself with worry

He will provide

He will provide

And do not worry

That you He will despise

For all the wrong you’ve done

You He has chosen as His own

His very own

And He can never despise His own

Seek first His kingdom come

And His righteousness

He will provide

You are precious in His eyes

He will provide

For you

“31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.” ~1 Corinthians 10

“8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 10Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

11Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” ~ 2 Timothy 2

“16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.” ~Galatians 5
