Proverbs: Teach

Sorry this is late, I ended up being more busy than expected this morning.  But here’s the next segment of Proverbs!  I wrote it more from a younger perspective, my own, who still is under some parental guidance and yet struggles to want to do what the world is saying to do.  But for those of you who are parents, there’s a challenge here for you too: are you faithfully teaching your children the ways of the Lord?  Are you trying to adorn them?

“8Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 9They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. 10My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. 11If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; 12let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; 13we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; 14cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— 15my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; 16for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. 17How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! 18These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! 19Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.” ~Proverbs 1

The Old Ones

Know nothing at all

About this generation

About me

They did well enough

While I was growing up

But I don’t need them

They are useless now

To me

Come, come

Call my generation

Come, come

Let’s feast together

Taste what we did not gather

Take what we did not earn

We deserve, we are good

Let’s lie in wait for the broken

For the weak

And take what they cannot keep

Come, come

Surely You, oh Lord

Set up my father

Over my head

For a good reason

Surely You, oh Lord

Set up my mother

Over my head

For a good reason

Their teaching is

What You’ve given them

And You’re offering them

To me

So that I may learn to please You

And help them be pleased too

Please help me too

Honor your father

Honor your mother

So that you may prosper

In the land the Lord

Is giving you

16“Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” ~Deuteronomy 5

“15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Fatherd is not in them. 16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” ~1 John 2

“18Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.” ~ Deuteronomy 11

Romans 2:5

But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

Ephesians 5:11

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
