Proverbs: What Goes Around

“1Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. 2I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. 3For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. 4Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. 5Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. 6Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. 7The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. 8Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. 9She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.”~Proverbs 4

The teacher

Starts as a student

The teacher

Starts with nothing

He is taught

By another

He is trained

By his father

.

What goes around

Comes around

So let it be of the good

.

There is a time

For children

To be loved, nurtured, cared for

There is a time

For children

To start eating solid things

Direct his step, Father,

In the way of the good

Instruct him, Father,

In wisdom’s ways

.

What goes around

Comes around

So let it be of the good

.

Be gentle and kind

I implore you

Direct in the steps

Of the LORD

Be gentle but firm

In wisdom’s ways

Understanding is also

Sure

Father, remember

Your own youth

Father, remember

You’re a warrior of truth

.

What goes around

Comes around

So let it be of the good

Psalm 89:

30“If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes, 31if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands, 32I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; 33but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.

Ephesians 6:4

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 11:

18Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

Hebrews 5:

13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Proverbs 1:8

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;

Psalm 34:

8Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. 9Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing. 10The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. 11Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, 13keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. 14Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Deuteronomy 32:2

“Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As the droplets on the fresh grass And as the showers on the herb.

Proverbs: Love your Neighbor Part 1

‘27Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. 28Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”— when you already have it with you.’ ~Proverbs 3

Ask it

Seek it

Find it now

Wisdom demands it

Will you show it now?

.

There is no greater love than this

To love your God

To love your neighbor

As yourself

Love one another

Don’t ignore

Each other

Now

.

Plans are on the table

Desire is in your heart

And then the voice is calling you

“Please! Please!”

You angrily turn away

The desire for you is too great

And the voice is calling you

“Please! Please!”

So you must

Because it is right

.

Do the good

You ought to

Do the good

In your power

.

And all around you

People vie for attention

Demanding things of you

Respect, honor,

Help me! Help!

And you don’t want to be bothered

.

Give each what they’re due

Especially the chosen few

.

Love each

God gave you love that is new

Love each

Especially the chosen few

.

Do you ever ask God for help?

Do you ever seek Him?

Does He ever not answer?

Then do you the same for one another

Do you the same for your brother

.

Ask it

Seek it

Find it now

Wisdom demands it

Will you show it now?

Luke 11:

9“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11“Which of you fathers, if your son asks forf a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Romans 13:7

“Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.”

Galatians 6:10

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to the family of faith.”

Deuteronomy 24:15

“You shall give him his wages on his day before the sun sets, for he is poor and sets his heart on it; so that he will not cry against you to the LORD and it become sin in you.”

Luke11:

“5Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.”

James 4

“17If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

“13Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

Sermon on the Mount: Abundant

7“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” ~Matthew 7

A prayer in the heart

Heart beats heart beat

A prayer on the tongue

Let it be

Bring it out

You need to speak it

You need to ask it

Seek ,seek

Seek it

It is time to knock, knock

At the door

.

A man is desperately wicked

Planning schemes of harm in his heart

He murders daily

With the weapon of hate

He steals constantly

With the lust of his eyes

He lies in wait

And tears down with his tongue

And yet his son comes to him

And asks for bread

And wicked man does not give him nothing

But provides what is needed

Wicked man knows even so

What is good

He knows it deep down

.

The Lord is infinitely good

He plans the good of His people,

The glory of His Name

He puts to justice murderers

And extends the arm of love

He puts to justice the thief

And gives abundantly to those He loves

He tears down the strongholds of the proud

And builds up the fortress of the humble

And when His own asks for bread

The Good Lord does not spurn the request

But provides what is needed, and very much more!

The Lord knows what is good and right

He overflows with righteousness

.

At the door

It is time to knock, knock

Seek it,

Seek, seek

You need to ask it

You need to speak it

Bring it out

Let it be

A prayer on the tongue

Heart beats heart beat

A prayer in the heart

Luke 11:13

If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Romans 8:32

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Psalm 84:11

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

Isaiah 63:7

I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the LORD has done for us– yes, the many good things he has done for Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses.

Sermon on the Mount: Honesty

33“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” ~Matthew 5

What good

Can the tongue bring?

That thing

Set ablaze with fire?

Mysteries

Perhaps it wields

Wickedness

It surely reveals

The heart

It is desperately evil

I boast of it

Every day

When things are easy

I promise it

And when it’s time

I struggle to obey

.

I remember Jephthah

A mighty man of God

Chosen to lead

Israel in battle

But he didn’t fully trust

God would help him through

So he easily made a vow

To sacrifice what came out

Of his home on his victorious return

And what should it be?

His only child

His only daughter

And he was bound to obey

His tongue had shackled him

To obey

.

If you make a vow

To God

Keep it

But is better not to do at all

Be honest in all you say

And you won’t be condemned

On that last day

Surely we will have to give an account

Even for the empty words we said

Can you remember any of those words

You said? I can’t.

Fall at God’s feet for mercy

Yearn for the good fruit of truth

And say only what you mean

For by it you will be acquitted

Speak always as to the Lord.

Speak always as to the Lord.

~

“12Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.” ~James 5

.

33“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” ~Matthew 12

.

“5Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” ~James 3

.

“21If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. 22But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. 23Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.” ~Deuteronomy 23

.

“29Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. 30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: ‘If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.’

“32Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. 33He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.

“34When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, ‘Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.’

36’My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites. 37But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.’

38”’You may go,’ he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.” ~Judges 11

My Pain, Your Pain, The LORD

For a loved one

Trust
Trust in the LORD
If I have none
Then in what can I trust?

I know
There seems to be
Pain around
Every
Single
Corner
I know
There seems to be
No end to
The
Enemie’s
Stabs
But in the end
All I can say is
“Glory to God”
Even when I
See
No
Glory

The Word
Believe what the Word says
If I do not have it
Then what really can I
Hold onto?

I know
There seems to be
No deliverance
God’s
Forgotten
Me
I know
There seems to be
A constant
Gnawing
At
My
Soul
But in the end
The truth of the Word
Is the only thing
I can cling to
All I can do
Is
Wait
On
The
LORD

Do not reject the LORD
My child
Do not reject Him
What do you have left?
Do not spurn His Words
My friend
Do not spurn it
To what can you now cling?
I know you don’t understand
And neither do I
But if you believe God is there
And that His word is right in everything
Then why turn your back on Him now
When you most desperately need Him?
He knows all
He is over all
And in all things
He will be glorified
And His people sanctified
And His church purified
And His Name praise
“As for me and my house
We
Will
Serve
The
LORD!”
~

“9We are given no signs from God;
no prophets are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10How long will the enemy mock you, God?
Will the foe revile your name forever?
11Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them

12But God is my King from long ago;
he brings salvation on the earth.” ~ Psalm 74

When the people of Israel were being oppressed and they cried out to God in Psalm 74, they didn’t merely say, “Act God!” or “Save us!”. And it wasn’t as if they didn’t feel rejected. But the point is that they still acknowledged God as God and wanted Him to be honored. They knew that it was His honor that was at stake, not their own annihilation.

When we’re in pain, do we reject God? When we feel crushed, do we trust His Word? His Word promises pain and not that we will always be pulled away from it. Do we believe Psalm 91 when it says “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be you shield and rampart.” ? Do we believe Romans 8:28-30 when it says that God works all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose; these people He predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son; these people He called, whom He also justified, whom He also glorified? Do we believe these things when pain is strong? Do we believe that God is good all of the time?

Because if we do not believe in His word, how can we trust Him? And if we cannot trust Him, then in what can we trust?

“Trust in the Lord
With all your heart
And lean not on your own understanding.
In all your ways
Acknowledge Him
And He will make your paths straight.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

Holy God: My Sanctification

There are days
That I feel weak,
Empty, and afraid
When this heart of gold
Begins to mold
And I’m left with
Nothing to say

I am nothing
I have nothing

There are days
When I feel weak,
Empty, and afraid
When this heart of gold
Feels so cold
In my anguish
I must pray

“Why am I this way?
Why am I nothing more?
Why am I this way?
Why have I nothing more
To show You?”

Til nothing black there be

He is my everything

There is pain
Around the corner,
Beyond the bend for me
This heart of gold
Must feel the heat of the coal
Shining pure for all to see

Christ’s likeness you will be

“6In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” ~ 1 Peter 1

“2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” ~James 1

“23May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5

“28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.” ~Romans 8

“1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” ~Isaiah 6

Holy God: My Prayer

Holy
By My people I will be
Regarded as Holy
Thus saith the LORD

And thus shall it ever be
Forbid it, LORD, that Your Name
Your Holy Name
Be profaned by Your people
That they trample it down
Down, down,
Deep into the dust
Forbid it, LORD, forbid it
Let it never be done

Thus saith the LORD
And thus shall it ever be
Forbid it, LORD, that Your ways
That Your ways be declared evil
By the lips of Your people
Your people, Your people,
Whom You have welcomed in Your sanctuary
Forbid it, LORD, forbid it
Let it never be done

Thus saith the LORD
And thus shall it ever be
Forbid it, LORD, that Your love
That Your love be thought cheap and open
By those who claim to bend the knee
Bend the knee, bend the knee
And then they leave and live as they please
Forbid it, LORD, forbid it
Let it never be done

Thus saith the LORD
And thus shall it ever be
Forbid it, LORD, that Your character
Your character be marred and distorted
By those You love
Love, love so deeply
That You call them Your own
Forbid it, LORD, forbid it
Let it never done

“1Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. 2And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron held his peace.” ~Leviticus 10

My Inspiration

My inspiration
It comes from the Lord’s mouth
Straight from a book
To my eyes
To my head
To my heart
To my fingers
They move
They press
They create a story
That you perhaps find interesting
Perhaps you smile
Or frown
Either way I hope
I hope it makes you think
I hope it makes you read
Not my words over and over again
But the LORD’s words
Over and over and over again

In the beginning of it all
When the earth was full of darkness
When it was without form
In that moment of time
When there was no time
There was God
God hovered over the waters
Looking down at the nothingness
And for the first time
In recorded history
He opened His mouth
His good mouth
His holy mouth
And He spoke
“Let there be light!”
And what did happen
Was amazing indeed
The darkness did not rise up
It did not swallow His words whole
No, it was chased away
By the light He created
The light that God did declare
Was good
Created from His good mouth
His holy mouth

His voice rang out
And His words did not
No, they did not return void
That was how His Word began,
In the beginning,
And that fills me with inspiration
It lights my eyes with life
It makes me itch with hope
And a need to type

And then I think,
What about you?
You who read my poetry
You who seem to care
Do you have verses
That inspire your life?
Do you read His Word
And feel your heart beat
Your soul leap up for joy
And your eyes glitter with life?
Or do you see only darkness
On every page?

My Fool: Psalm 53

Fools, fools,
Every one one of them fools
They make me sick
With their ways of deceit
They lie, they cheat,
They covet and kill
They devour the innocent
And never get their fill of it
And yet they are worried
They are sick with fright
What are they afraid of?
Why are they overwhelmed with worry?
I do not know
I cannot see it
But even as they shake
Shivering in their shoes
They refuse to call on God
They refuse to acknowledge the existence of God
They refuse understanding
And refuse to seek Him out
Fools, fools,
Every one of them fools!

God looks down from heaven
He looks down at the surface of the earth
To see if there are any
Who understands
To see if there are any
Who seek His face
Does He see me?
Does He see you?
There is no one does good,
Not even one!

Fools are we
Fools am I
Who is corrupt to the core
But the Lord has reached down
And chosen whom to bestow His grace on
When He looks down
Now what does He see?
He doesn’t see you or me
He sees His Son’s blood
Covering us
Inside and out

Do not be overwhelmed with worry
The LORD will deliver you from all your troubles
What has the Lord promised?
He will bring salvation!
He will restore His people!
Praise the Lord!
Be glad!
Understand
Seek His face
Trust Him
And be glad!
~

“1The fool says in his heart,
‘There is no God.’
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

“2God looks down from heaven
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.
3Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

“4Do all these evildoers know nothing?
They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on God.
5But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
where there was nothing to dread.
God scattered the bones of those who attacked you;
you put them to shame, for God despised them.

“6Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!”
~Psalm 53
