Proverbs: Wisdom’s Call-Hard Words

Today’s passage is not a very happy or encouraging one.  It is the part of Wisdom’s call that is a terrible warning of what the Day of God’s wrath will bring.  But it is important to hear these words otherwise they wouldn’t be there in Scripture, and it is important to remember that that Day is not today.  So please don’t let this be you, who suppresses the truth and thus condemns yourself.  And for those of you who are believers, praise God that this Day is not for you and think of this warning when you go out into the world– there are still those who need to hear Wisdom’s Call, and although I didn’t include it here, you are a part of that call too.

20Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; 21on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: 22“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? 23Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. 24But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, 25since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, 26I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— 27when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

28“Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, 29since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord. 30Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, 31they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. 32For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” ~Proverbs 1

The fear of the LORD

Is the beginning of wisdom

And wisdom is what

We should listen to

Always she is calling out,

Imploring us to change

But the day will come

When it will be too late

.

Wisdom calls out—

Who can hear her?

God can be seen—

Who can see Him?

Has not His creation declared it?

“There is a God! He is the LORD!”

Does not life demand it?

“None of us are good. We need a righteous Savior.”

.

But no

Let us go our own way

Do as we see fit

No one seems to notice

The destruction it has caused

How we are slitting our own wrists

Slowly, slowly

Put the blame on discipline

And our children despise us

And go the same way

Put the blame on laws

So we slice those away

Put the blame on government

They tighten their hold

Put the blame on God

And He grows cold

.

The day will come

When we call out to the children

And they will lock us behind bars

When we yearn for some rules

But the only ones left condemn us

When we wish to throw off the governments control

But their grip is too strong

When we cry out to God for salvation, wisdom

.

But He will not hear

The judgment has come

“1The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” ~Psalm 19

“18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.” ~Romans 1

Isaiah 65:2

All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations—

Zechariah 7:13

“‘When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,’ says the LORD Almighty.

Isaiah 65:12

I will destine you for the sword, and all of you will fall in the slaughter; for I called but you did not answer, I spoke but you did not listen. You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me.”

1Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, 3“Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” 4The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” ~Psalm 2

Sermon on the Mount: In the Eye

1“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 6Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” ~Matthew 7

Rubbing at your eye

Something hurting there

You look in the mirror

All you can see is red

Pink and bleary

Nothing much to see when you stare

Something is hurting there

In your eye

.

Judging by what I can see

You’ve got a speck of

A little bit of me

I judged you often for your weakness

And my plank poked you right

Right in the eye

Your faith is different than mine

I’m sorry I irritated you

With that speck

Judgment is clouding you, I see

.

Christ came you know

To die for you

Die for me

To make us the Lord’s

We’re servants, you and me

So why do we judge one another?

We should be in unity

Let all we do bring thanks

We should be in harmony

Not judging what is temporal

In you and me

We are the Lord’s

By the Savior

Of you and me

That’s why Christ came you know

~

Romans 14 and part of 15(emphasis added):

1Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

5One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

10You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11It is written:

“ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,

‘every knee will bow before me;

every tongue will acknowledge God.’ ”

12So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.

19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

1We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. 3For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” 4For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

5May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

Sermon on the Mount: Blindness

Each of us longs for it

To be taken by the hand

Led away like sheep.

The path is always shrouded in darkness—

Oh, if only someone would tell me

The direction I am to go!

~

Each of us has it

The pride we have that we

We are the center of this universe.

We take someone by the hand and say

“Follow me through this dark place

I’ve passed it before, I’ll lead you in the right way.”

~

In the end it is a long string of the blind leading blind

And none see the chasm—each fall down.

~

Measure up! Measure up!

Who is to blame?

That one drinks, another over thinks.

That one keeps to himself too much

The other controls not his tongue.

This one is too complying

And that one judges too much.

You are too full of anger to be regarded well

And I am too sensitive to be taken seriously.

And yet in the end who is to blame?

What measure can measure the wrongness of who we are?

I’m sure your fault outweighs my own—

This isn’t my fault.

~

Blind leads blind

Straight to the Judgment Seat

And the LORD opens His Book

And the LORD sees

All the failures matched up

In each of us—

What law have I not broken?

What have you not kept?

The LORD sees

The LORD measures

The LORD judges.

~

We will each receive what we have sown.

So sow what is right, brother.

Let me speak when I see you falling

And let you speak when you see it in me.

In the truth is the LORD pleased.

Let Him lead us in the straight and narrow way—

He alone, after all, can truly see.

~

Luke 6:37-42

37“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

39He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.

41“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

1 John 5:16a

16If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.

1 Corinthians 5

12What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked person from among you.”

John 8:7

When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Romans 2:1

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

Romans 14:10

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

Romans 14:13

Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

1 Corinthians 4:5

Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.

James 4:11

Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.

My Anger, My Darkness

I feel a deep
Sure footed misery
Lay its cold hand upon me
And unbidden ugliness
Fills my inward parts
I see that look in your eye
My hackles raise
I hear that tone in your voice
My tongue is quick to
Outdo your hard voice
And as the moment of rage
Passes away
I am left guilty
And you are left hurting
And so the flood waters rage
Between us
Until the hurricane is
Let loose
Leaving destruction and
Tears in its wake
Words of sorrow and forgiveness
Are spoken
At least momentarily genuine
Yet my heart is hardened
Against you
When will the winds of terror
Begin again to rise?
~
I see you trembling
I see you struggling
I hardly know what terrors you face
But I know that indeed you feel
Its deadly embrace
I myself am no stranger
To the darkness
And its cold grip of fear
Clings to my skin
Yes, I should not scorn
The monster in your closet
When I look closely
I recognize it
It is brother to my own
~
How ugly are these monsters
We must daily face
Morbid and deformed
Yet no face do I find
They are pictures of agony
With no true form
And I yearn to sweep them away
But they always return
Why oh why
Do I seem so paralyzed?
Blackened and bloody
By no solid fist
Stabbed and ripped to pieces
By no true claws that exist
Yet still I run into the darkness
When there’s light to be had
I know I want to choose the good
But right now all I hold is bad
~
Mother soothes back my skin
Her humming a reminder of peace
And father leans back with a pipe in his mouth
A little twinkle in his eye
And there is my sister smiling as she knits
Her mind is not clouded like mine
And slowly I’m reminded that God is here
And where He is there is peace
Peace for all that are His

“25To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27You save the humble
but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
28You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.

29With your help I can advance against a troop;
with my God I can scale a wall.” ~Psalm 18
