Message: In the Hard Times

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Have hope

Be you hopeful

Have peace

Be you peaceful

(But what if

There is no hope?

What if

There is no peace?)

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.

Have grace

Be you graceful

Have life

Be you living to the full

(But what if

There is only anger?

What if

There is so much death?)

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Have truth

Be you truthful

Have spirit

Be you full of Him

(Even when

There are lies?

Even when

Christ is despised?)

20 On the contrary:  “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”  21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:9-21

Food For Thought: God is Worth It

Sometimes things go wrong. Sometimes it feels like every day has a vendetta against you, that every person is trying to push you to the limit, that life itself is fighting to make you miserable. It’s just one thing after another, and no matter how hard you try to fight your own sour mood you keep falling down deeper and deeper into the gloom until at last you just don’t want to try anymore.

And then you wake in the morning and you know you need to read your bible, but you just don’t feel like it. What difference will it make, really? God already sees you and knows you, and He obviously is okay with your life being garbage, so what’s the point?

The point of reading your bible is not so that God will see you. It isn’t as though opening the book sends out a beacon of light and God says, “Oh look, a faithful servant! I wonder how he/she is doing today.” God already knows how you are, where you are, and most importantly He wants to be a part of your life. And aren’t these the very words of God? Consume them, they draw you closer to His throne.

The point of reading your bible isn’t to magically make you feel better, to automatically fix your life. If all you care about is being happy go watch Hallmark movies—24/7. If you’d read your bible you’d know that 1). God wants a real, deep relationship with you, 2). Your purpose is to glorify God, 3). Suffering is a part of life, and 4). God works together all things for the good of those who love Him. So, read your bible, it will help you understand the Lord and encourage you in your walk with Him.

Not everyone in the bible had everything is easy and happy. There are plenty of instances of people who shared your situation, many times ten times worse. But when they turned to God as their Rock, He helped them through it, in whatever way He saw fit to do so. David before he became king was chased by Saul for eleven years, Job suffered for ‘no apparent reason’ and the only answer he received was that God is God—and yet God blessed him all the more abundantly when the suffering came to an end.

So here is my encouraging passage for you who are having a rough day, week, month, whatever it may be. Be encouraged and go to God. He is always worth it.

1Vindicate me, my God,

and plead my cause

against an unfaithful nation.

Rescue me from those who are

deceitful and wicked.

2You are God my stronghold.

Why have you rejected me?

Why must I go about mourning,

oppressed by the enemy?

3Send me your light and your faithful care,

let them lead me;

let them bring me to your holy mountain,

to the place where you dwell.

4Then I will go to the altar of God,

to God, my joy and my delight.

I will praise you with the lyre,

O God, my God.

5Why, my soul, are you downcast?

Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God,

for I will yet praise him,

my Savior and my God.

~Psalm 43

Proverbs: Sweet Word of God

Sorry this is a day late.  I hope you’re still able to read and think on God’s word!

“1My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. 3Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” ~Proverbs 3

Let me meditate

Let me think on it

Let me keep it hidden

Deep in my heart

Let me greatly desire

To do all in my power

To do it

Live it out

Speak Lord speak

On Your words

I will meditate

I will meditate

Day and night

Your words Lord

Are my strength

Protecting me

Throughout the day

Your words Lord

Are my treasure

They give me hope

Of the coming reward

Reward of Your presence

Your words Lord

They are my strength

They are my strength

Night and day

Rejoice oh my soul!

The Lord speaks to you

Rejoice oh my soul!

The Lord has not abandoned you

Rejoice! Rejoice!

Meditate on the words

By living according to your word. 10I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. 12Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees. 13With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. 14I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. 15I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. 16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” ~Psalm 119

Proverbs: Seek the LORD

“33but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm. 1My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—3indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.” ~Proverbs 1-2

Of the LORD

You who are greatly loved

His hand is over you

His wings are overshadowing you

Nothing have you to fear

Nothing have you to dread

The LORD is at hand

The sweet path of life

Is the path you tread

Seek it out,

Seek it out

You will find great treasure

You will find great reward

You seek Him with all of Your heart

Seek wisdom

Seek understanding

Seek out the LORD

The fear of the LORD

What great treasure is this—

We get to fear Him!

Fear the LORD!

“7The law of the Lord is perfect,

Reviving the soul;

The testimony of the Lord is sure,

Making wise the simple;

8The precepts of the Lord are right,

Rejoicing the heart;

The commandment of the Lord is pure,

Enlightening the eyes;

9The fear of the Lord is clean,

Enduring forever;

The rules of the Lord are true,

And righteous altogether.

10More to be desired are they than gold,

Even much fine gold;

Sweeter also than honey

And drippings of the honeycomb.

11Moreover, by them is Your servant warned;

In keeping them there is great reward.” ~Psalm 19

“11For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” ~Jeremiah 29

1 Kings 3:9

“So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

Matthew 13:44

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his joy he went and sold all he had and bought that field.

Proverbs 8:17

“I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me.

Sermon on the Mount: Rock and Sand

This is the end of the Sermon on the Mount series.  It has been very long but very enjoyable to go through, and I hope you were encouraged and learned a lot through it as I was.  If you have any suggestions about what I should write about next, either a passage, book, or topic, please feel free to comment below.  In any case, thanks for going the journey with me and I hope you’ll continue to join me as I meditate on the treasures of God’s word!

24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” ~Matthew 7

I heard the words

I heard Your voice

I listened and I

Knelt down to pray

Is a new day

Will I follow

All You have to say?

Built up

And the wind did blow

Built up

And the water did rise

I feel pride

It protects me on the outside

I feel like

I need to tear you down

In my anger

‘You deserve so much better’

The world tells me

Follow after

Clothes, food, enjoyment of life

And I feel so anxious all the time

But I

I heard the words

I heard Your voice

I listened and I

Knelt down to pray

Is a new day

Will I follow

All You have to say?

Built up

And the wind did blow

Built up

And the water did rise

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

Neither are your ways my ways,”

Declares the LORD

For the foolishness of God is

Wiser than man’s wisdom,

And the weakness of God is

Stronger than man’s strength

On what shall I build on?

Sand or the rock?

Need I protect myself with pride?

Should I clothe myself in humility?

Whom do I serve?

Man or God?

Built up on the sand

The wind did blow it over

Built up on the rock

The water did rise up

And did no damage

It’s the same storm

With two different results

It’s the same storm

I heard the words

I heard Your voice

I listened and I

Knelt down to pray

Is a new day

Will I follow

All You have to say?

(Isaiah 55:8)

(1 Corinthians 1:25)

Proverbs 10:8

The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.

Proverbs 10:25

When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.

The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm.

John 13:17

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Romans 2:13

For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

James 1:22

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

My Pain, Your Pain, The LORD

For a loved one

Trust in the LORD
If I have none
Then in what can I trust?

I know
There seems to be
Pain around
I know
There seems to be
No end to
But in the end
All I can say is
“Glory to God”
Even when I

The Word
Believe what the Word says
If I do not have it
Then what really can I
Hold onto?

I know
There seems to be
No deliverance
I know
There seems to be
A constant
But in the end
The truth of the Word
Is the only thing
I can cling to
All I can do

Do not reject the LORD
My child
Do not reject Him
What do you have left?
Do not spurn His Words
My friend
Do not spurn it
To what can you now cling?
I know you don’t understand
And neither do I
But if you believe God is there
And that His word is right in everything
Then why turn your back on Him now
When you most desperately need Him?
He knows all
He is over all
And in all things
He will be glorified
And His people sanctified
And His church purified
And His Name praise
“As for me and my house

“9We are given no signs from God;
no prophets are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10How long will the enemy mock you, God?
Will the foe revile your name forever?
11Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them

12But God is my King from long ago;
he brings salvation on the earth.” ~ Psalm 74

When the people of Israel were being oppressed and they cried out to God in Psalm 74, they didn’t merely say, “Act God!” or “Save us!”. And it wasn’t as if they didn’t feel rejected. But the point is that they still acknowledged God as God and wanted Him to be honored. They knew that it was His honor that was at stake, not their own annihilation.

When we’re in pain, do we reject God? When we feel crushed, do we trust His Word? His Word promises pain and not that we will always be pulled away from it. Do we believe Psalm 91 when it says “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be you shield and rampart.” ? Do we believe Romans 8:28-30 when it says that God works all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose; these people He predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son; these people He called, whom He also justified, whom He also glorified? Do we believe these things when pain is strong? Do we believe that God is good all of the time?

Because if we do not believe in His word, how can we trust Him? And if we cannot trust Him, then in what can we trust?

“Trust in the Lord
With all your heart
And lean not on your own understanding.
In all your ways
Acknowledge Him
And He will make your paths straight.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

Straight into His arms.

My Same Old

I want something new
Not the same old
Same old
Not the same thing to do
Over and over
Tired of reading the Word
Only to sleep
And have to start again
Why should I pray again
If I have nothing new to say?
All over again
The same old
Same old
I want something new

But then the new comes
And with it chaos
Nothing steady
Nothing sure
Nothing real
But then the new comes
And I feel numbed
I feel lost
I feel afraid
I bathe in this new lotion
And smell like a sewer
Because I didn’t want the old
Same old
I wanted something new

Test me Father
Know my heart
Try me and know my mind
Hear this voice of mine
Oh so small and insignificant
Know what unsatisfied feelings
I harbor deep within

When I forsook the new
And returned my face to the old
Same old
I tasted again the sweetness
Of the Word
And felt the joy it brought
When I returned to the same old
Same old
I found a sure foundation
I found You
And realized You had never
Never left my side
Though I am faithless
You are ever faithful
And for that I praise Your Name
He is my LORD
The One and Only GOD!
Praise Him!

“1Keep me safe, my God,
for in you I take refuge.

2I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.”
3I say of the holy people who are in the land,
“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
4Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
or take up their names on my lips.

5Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
6The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

9Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
10because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” ~Psalm 16

“8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 10Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
11Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
12if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
13if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.” ~ 2 Timothy 2

“22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” ~James 1

My Inspiration

My inspiration
It comes from the Lord’s mouth
Straight from a book
To my eyes
To my head
To my heart
To my fingers
They move
They press
They create a story
That you perhaps find interesting
Perhaps you smile
Or frown
Either way I hope
I hope it makes you think
I hope it makes you read
Not my words over and over again
But the LORD’s words
Over and over and over again

In the beginning of it all
When the earth was full of darkness
When it was without form
In that moment of time
When there was no time
There was God
God hovered over the waters
Looking down at the nothingness
And for the first time
In recorded history
He opened His mouth
His good mouth
His holy mouth
And He spoke
“Let there be light!”
And what did happen
Was amazing indeed
The darkness did not rise up
It did not swallow His words whole
No, it was chased away
By the light He created
The light that God did declare
Was good
Created from His good mouth
His holy mouth

His voice rang out
And His words did not
No, they did not return void
That was how His Word began,
In the beginning,
And that fills me with inspiration
It lights my eyes with life
It makes me itch with hope
And a need to type

And then I think,
What about you?
You who read my poetry
You who seem to care
Do you have verses
That inspire your life?
Do you read His Word
And feel your heart beat
Your soul leap up for joy
And your eyes glitter with life?
Or do you see only darkness
On every page?

My Illness

My illness
An ugly thought
Shame and fear
That poisons my insides
It stirs and stirs
All that is in me
Until I can’t hold it in
Any longer
And I vomit it up
All the garbage I allowed
To grow up inside there
My body shakes
My forehead sweats
My eyes fill with tears
And my mouth opens
To beg with words
“Lord, God, please!
Please end this misery in me!”
But how can it end?
He must remove all the gunk in me
All the filth I ate up
Instead of His Word to refresh me
His Word
What a delightful thing
Bread to the belly
And honey to the tongue
Comfort for the mournful
And delight to the heart
His Word
How it used to dazzle my eyes
Make me gasp in wonder
Cause me to sing in praise
But now I am too proud
I wallow in what seems to me
To be rich and fulfilling
But really makes me
A drunken fool
I partake in it every day
Whenever my trembling hands
Do seize upon it
And I fall deeper and deeper
Into nothingness
To the point where I doubt
Even my own
And the thought of this
It terrifies my soul
I beg the LORD
“Please assure me!”
But I continue in my drunken state
How can He assure me?
How can He speak to me?
When it is Him and His Word
I have denied to my very soul?
I have forsaken my first love
But now
In His great mercy
The time of vomiting has come
To remove this filth
From my bosom
And make me holy
As He is holy
And now I look
At the words in Jeremiah 15
‘15 O LORD, you know;
remember me and visit me,
stand take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In your forbearance take me not away;
know that for your sake I bear reproach.
16 Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name,
O LORD, God of hosts.
17 I did not sit in the company of revelers,
nor did I rejoice;
I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,
for you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unceasing,
my wound incurable,
refusing to be healed?
Will you be to me like a deceitful brook,
like waters that fail?
19 Therefore thus says the LORD:
“If you return, I will restore you,
and you shall stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
you shall be as my mouth.
They shall turn to you,
but you shall not turn to them.
20 And I will make you to this people
a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you,
but they shall not prevail over you,
for I am with you
to save you and deliver you,
declares the LORD.
21 I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,
and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”’
I know these are words
Between Jeremiah and the LORD
But when I read the words
The words spoken by the LORD
About returning
And not speaking what is worthless
I feel as if He is speaking those words to me
And all I can do is pray
Remove all that is in me that is worthless
That I may have Your words
And be as bronze
