Sermon on the Mount: Rock and Sand

This is the end of the Sermon on the Mount series.  It has been very long but very enjoyable to go through, and I hope you were encouraged and learned a lot through it as I was.  If you have any suggestions about what I should write about next, either a passage, book, or topic, please feel free to comment below.  In any case, thanks for going the journey with me and I hope you’ll continue to join me as I meditate on the treasures of God’s word!

24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” ~Matthew 7

I heard the words

I heard Your voice

I listened and I

Knelt down to pray

Today

Is a new day

Will I follow

All You have to say?

.

Built up

And the wind did blow

Built up

And the water did rise

.

I feel pride

It protects me on the outside

I feel like

I need to tear you down

In my anger

‘You deserve so much better’

The world tells me

Follow after

Clothes, food, enjoyment of life

And I feel so anxious all the time

But I

.

I heard the words

I heard Your voice

I listened and I

Knelt down to pray

Today

Is a new day

Will I follow

All You have to say?

.

Built up

And the wind did blow

Built up

And the water did rise

.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

Neither are your ways my ways,”

Declares the LORD

For the foolishness of God is

Wiser than man’s wisdom,

And the weakness of God is

Stronger than man’s strength

On what shall I build on?

Sand or the rock?

.

Need I protect myself with pride?

Should I clothe myself in humility?

Whom do I serve?

Man or God?

.

Built up on the sand

The wind did blow it over

Built up on the rock

The water did rise up

And did no damage

It’s the same storm

With two different results

It’s the same storm

.

I heard the words

I heard Your voice

I listened and I

Knelt down to pray

Today

Is a new day

Will I follow

All You have to say?

~

(Isaiah 55:8)

(1 Corinthians 1:25)

Proverbs 10:8

The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.

Proverbs 10:25

When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.

Proverbs 12:7

The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm.

John 13:17

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Romans 2:13

For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

James 1:22

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Wisdom: Two Kinds

13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”  ~James 3

Sometimes

You just need to stop–

And think–

Why are you doing

What you are doing?

.

Is chaos ruling

In your heart?

Is it causing you

To hurt yourself

Or another?

Would God look down

And shake His head

And say

“This does not have

My mark

Of approval.” ?

.

If yes

If chaos rules

In your heart

Do not boast

Speak the truth

Lay it aside

Tear it asunder

It is a sign

Worldly wisdom is

The apple of your eye

And you’ve done

What God told you not to

You’ve conformed

.

If no

If peace rules

In your heart

Speak the truth

Embrace it

Sow it deep

It is a sign

Godly wisdom is

The apple of your eye

And you’ve done

What God told you to

You love Him

.

Surely if you sow peace

You will reap

Righteousness

Look to every good thing

And keep away

Envy

And

Selfish ambition

Keep peace

Love God

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Fatherd is not in them. 16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” ~1 John 2

8Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.  9Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.  10The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.  11For through wisdomb your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.  12If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.” ~ Proverbs 9

My Mind on Heaven

But her eyes they told of a wondrous day,
Full of flowers and smiles and all things gay,
And kings and princes with their beautiful wives,
And land streamed with knights who would gladly lay down their lives,
And the grass was so green and sky so blue,
It was never night, the eternal light shining on the chosen few,
The few so numerous they fill the world,
Their voices so quiet they thundered praises to the Lord,
The mountains rose tall and the rivers ran deep,
The lion with the deer gave a joyous leap,
And hidden deep in the darkness of the caves,
There was not a secret, all wrong buried in the grave,
There was no death or tears,
Away were all fears,
The High King ruled in justice and love,
On His shoulder rested the peaceful dove,
A thousand years prior all the enemies and evil had been destroyed,
And rolling on thousands more years had been deployed,
All the people were perfect and pure,
Their hope and future now had been made sure,
Everything they’d longed for on old earth,
That had been promised even at the King’s birth,
It had been completed and been realized,
All of their lives had been sanctified,
And they lived to worship the King,
For salvation He did certainly bring,
And they sang for all eternity,
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord Almighty!
The earth is filled with His glory!
Amen!”
And Amen.

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” ~Colossians 3:1-4

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.” ~ Revelation 21:1-11

“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
“And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” ~Revelation 21:22-22:7

My Heart Is…

My heart is bigger

Than my mind

I can’t figure out

How to accomplish

What I’ve set out

To do

My heart is more kind

Than my eyes

I can’t see all

The love I know

Exists out there

What I desire to

My heart is more helpful

Than my hands

I can’t find enough to do

My heart is more truthful

Than my mouth is willing to be
