Food For Thought: Knowledge Is Not Enough

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot this week, since finding out that a friend of mine lost a sister.  I’ve not really experienced death in my family at all yet, so seeing her grief really hit me hard.  That’s what I’m discussing in a fashion in this post.

It is not enough to know.

It is not enough to possess knowledge.

Although knowledge is still a good thing.

I know that death is sad.

I know that those who believe and die go to Heaven to be with our Savior; they have gained the prize!

I know this.

But when my good friend melted in my kitchen, the day her sister died, that knowledge dd not help me.

I did not know what to do or say, how or if I should comfort her.

All I could do was hug her.

And that’s all she wanted and needed.

Love.

Knowledge is good.

It grounds us in truth.

But you don’t really know until you experience it.

You haven’t really gotten it until you are in it.

I fear the day I hear someone I love has died.

But I know: God is good.

I know that others will love me.

I know it, but it won’t be real until I see it.

Until I have it.

“We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3But whoever loves God is known by God.a” ~1 Corinthians 8:1b-3

3His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

10Therefore, my brothers and sisters,a make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.” ~2 Peter 1

My Freedom: God’s Presence

Who comes
Into the presence
Of the Most Holy?
He has hands
Free of the stain
The awful drippings
Of blood
They are clean
Of malice and greed
No lie is marked
On the skin
He carries his offering
Without guilt or shame
He honors
The LORD

Who comes
Into the presence
Of the Most Holy?
He has lips
That drip honey
The fruit of the
Sweet nectar
Of wisdom
Knowledge
And truth
His tongue is free
Of any fire of sin
He can sing
Without guilt or shame
He honors
The LORD

Who comes
Into the presence
Of the Most Holy?
He is clothed
In garments pure white
That shine with the brightness
Of the Father’s face
Adorned in gold
Jewels
Majesty
He is free to stand there
Without guilt or shame
He honors
The LORD

“This is My Son
In Him I am pleased.”

“1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” ~Galatians 5:1a

“Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah” ~Psalm 24

“1What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.” ~Galatians 4

My Meditation: 2 Peter 1:3

How often

Do we feel like

We can’t make it

Through this life

Will we really receive

Everything we need

To survive?

Will we be good enough

To accomplish anything

Anything at all?

Will we live lives full of purpose

Or will we live only to die?

~

Do you know the LORD?

Do you know who He is?

He called you not

For how good or accomplished you were

Or are

But because He is glorious

Because of His goodness

He’s called you

Because of who He is

Called you to know the LORD

~

How many times

Do we cry out

Feeling so ashamed?

We feel like

We can never

Stand in the footsteps

Of the Savior

Can we lift up hands

Like His holy hands?

Can we have faith

That moves mountains?

Can we ever stand in

The Divine Presence

And ever hear the words

“Well done,

Good and faithful servant”?

~

Do you know the LORD?

Do you know who He is?

He called you not

For how good or accomplished you were

Or are

But because He is glorious

Because of His goodness

He’s called you

Because of who He is

Called you to know the LORD

~

The LORD

He is

Glorious

Sing praises of

All He has done

The LORD

He is

So very good

He’s so merciful

To us

His power it is

Infinitely able

To provide for us

All we ever need

For life

For godliness

Do you know the LORD?

~

“His divine power has give us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.” ~2 Peter 1:3

My Meditation: 1 Peter 1:1-2

Righteous
To be without guilt
To be without sin
To never have killed a soul
Whether shedding blood
Or hating in the heart
To never have stolen
To never have been jealous
Of what was not yours
To never have told a single lie
White or otherwise
To never have used the holy name
The Holy Name of the LORD in vain
That is to be righteous
To be without shame
To be without sin
~
No one has done this
No one is good
What good I’ve thought I’ve done
All is worthless
All of it a lie
How much a idolize
The praise of men
Stealing what was only meant for the LORD
And not giving Him
What He created me for
How I deserve
Eternal Hell
Despising all that He is
Despising all that He does
I deserve not His love
I deserve not an ounce of grace
~
Righteous
Lord God and Savior
Jesus Christ
He came down to earth
For He loved me
He became my sin
Because He loved me
He died a death I deserved
Because He loved me
He rose to life
Because He loves me
And now He is mine
And His righteousness
It has clothed me
In Him I have received faith
Faith more precious than gold
In Him I have
Abundance of grace
From God
Abundance of peace
With God
For I know Him
Through Christ
I know Him!
He is my God
My Savior
My King
My everything
He is my Righteousness
~
“Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: Grace ad peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ our Lord.” ~1 Peter 1:1-2
